Lauder is the oldest ancient burgh in Scotland
and the town of Lauder sits on the historic route between
England and Edinburgh.
While you’re here, we recommend you
have a look at the Lauder Church,
just over the road from the Black Bull. It was built
in 1673 and is designed in an unusual Greek cross plan
with an octagonal tower.
Visible from some of our windows is Thirlestane
Castle. A wooden structure built for Edward I
in 1286 during his invasion of England, it’s been
rebuilt a number of times over the years. In 1670 it
was transformed from a fortified house into the grand
palace it is today. Definitely worth a look.
